Background

COPE was formed in 1986 to offer consultancy in thermal biomass conversion including pyrolysis, liquefaction, gasification and combustion to create power, heat, biofuels and renewable chemicals.

The principal of COPE is Tony (AV) Bridgwater, a professor of chemical engineering at Aston University where he formed and developed an internationally renowned research group that focuses on fast pyrolysis – the Bioenergy Research Group: BERG.

Tony Bridgwater has worked in the area of bioenergy and biofuels for over 30 years, contributing to the first biofuel feasibility studies in the UK and subsequently coordinating or being actively involved in over 30 European projects on biomass and bioenergy as well as UK and international projects. He is currently technical director of the UK centre of excellence on biomass and bioenergy – SUPERGEN Bioenergy – a consortium of 14 academic partners and 10 companies.

Services offered

There is extensive experience of biomass conversion which is available for consultancy on technical and economic feasibility of equipment, processes and systems that convert biomass and waste into renewable and sustainable energy products, including biofuels, biorefineries, heat and power.

Experimental facilities including fast pyrolysis, gasification and analysis are available through contracts with Aston University.
